Flagstaff Gallery is celebrating its 25th year. Established in 1993, it is a contemporary art gallery based in Devonport. Its celebratory show, "twenty five”, opens on 23 August and is a group exhibition showcasing new works from 40 artists.

Present Flagstaff owners Cary and Doug Cochrane purchased the gallery in September 2015 and have since refurbished the space, bringing with it a wave of new artists, ideas and energy. This exhibition is an opportunity to tell a new story within the context of a long history in Devonport. “Inspiring young minds, making art accessible and relevant to contemporary viewers and maintaining the art culture in Devonport, which is part of its heritage, is really important to us,” they say.

“There is no doubt that art galleries would not be able to exist without the support they receive from their community. Local support is really important and Devonport and the wider Auckland community have been amazing!”

Flagstaff Gallery currently represents over 60 artists and is a friendly, relaxed space in which to view New Zealand art. The range of works on display is constantly changing so there is always something new and interesting for visitors to enjoy.

A London National Gallery spokesperson says: “Children benefit a great deal from visiting art galleries and museums… it widens their horizons, can develop inquisitiveness and curiosity about the world, boost creativity, and foster craftsmanship and storytelling.”

"Visiting an art gallery can be stimulating, thought provoking and interesting, but above all should be fun for visitors of all ages and backgroundsm," say Cary and Doug. "Anyone who visits will be made welcome. Our gallery is for everyone!"
