Bays locals are certainly spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out in Browns Bay. In fact we have never had the choice we have right now, with lots of different options to tempt our tastebuds. So, for this issue of the Browns Bay Magazine we thought it appropriate that we highlight as many of our local eateries as possible, just to make readers aware of the options that are right here on our doorstep.
Freyberg Café Restaurant and Bar
Locals have been talking about the sensational tastes that are available at Freyberg Restaurant in Inverness Road. The word is that the food is very special – with the Lamb Shanks being the real talk of the town.
Avantha Fernando, the proud owner, is originally from Sri Lanka and this is his first restaurant. But the chef, with a strong love of food, has over 10 years experience in the restaurant trade, which he is now applying to his own restaurant.
Freyberg Restaurant is located a little bit away from the hustle and bustle of the main street but offers easy parking and a place for customers to relax and unwind in Browns Bay in a park-like setting.
At Freyberg, Avantha has a nice variety of European dishes to choose from such as: beer battered snapper fillet, Freyberg gourmet burger and his seafood chowder is famous in Browns Bay. And of course those lamb shanks!
To tempt you along there are apparently some specials still available, including:- Tuesday Night – $15.00 Pork Belly or Steak with free Garlic Bread; Thursday Night – $16.50 Lamb Shank; Saturday Night – You will receive a free glass of wine compliments of the chef with every main meal purchase.
Beach Bistro (or beach.bistro as owners Steve and Anita prefer it to be written) is a real local gem. One of the Bays best cafes for coffee and now an informal family style dining experience – with their ‘Bistro Nights’ from 5pm until 8pm on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
These nights are all about sharing with a menu that changes every week – entrees just $14, main $25 and desserts $10. If you haven’t experienced a Bistro Night at beach.bistro then you are definitely missing out! Make sure you book though to avoid disappointment as the nights are popular.
Locals just love the place, and not just because of its great setting on the waterfront, but because the hospitality is first class and the menu keeps changing to tempt our tastebuds. Right now at beach.bistro they’ve tweaked their menu for winter. Steve says, "Winter is here, so it’s comfort food time, soups, pastas and homemade baked beans."
At beach.bistro they use free-range, organic and locally produced ingredients and they are conscious of dietary requirements with gluten-free, vegetarian and paleo options available.
They are fully licensed and offer warn hospitality, hot coffee and hearty food with integrity.
Bolliwood Indian Restaurant in Anzac Road, is one of the most popular restaurants in Browns Bay, with a great location, close to the beach. It is one of five Bolliwood restaurants across Auckland, which was first established 15 years ago in the year 2000.
It is a great restaurant just for two; or for friends, family or business gatherings; or for a large group function – with a large space and the biggest screen you have ever seen in any Auckland Indian Restaurant.
The food quality and reputation has been achieved by having only five star chefs from India who ensure their dishes and exotic curries are constantly the best in Auckland.
Right now you can take advantage of their Lunch Special – just $10 for any Curry, which includes Rice, Naan and your choice of a soft drink. On Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday you can also buy all mains for Dinner for just $10. Offers are for dine in or takeaway – their takeaway menu is very popular.
Bolliwood is open 7 days for lunch from 11.30am to 2.30pm and dinner 5pm until late.
As featured in this issue, Franco’s is a new restaurant that has opened in the heart of Browns Bay – just off Clyde Road – corner of Inverness Road.
It’s owned and operated by Fenkie Liong, originally from Indonesia. Fenkie has spent 27 years as a chef and has been the brains behind many a successful restaurant launches, including ‘Vabane’ in Jakarta, Indonesia; ‘Totobene’ in Hong Kong; and The Samurai in Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour. For the past Nine years he has been the head chef at The Wine Box in Albany.
Franko’s has a strong focus on supporting the local community, employing local staff and buying fresh local produce to ensure the finest ingredients are served. All dishes are created with passion in a modern European cuisine style and Fenkie's aim is for you to enjoy each mouthful of his dining experience.

Open daily from 8.30am until 9.30pm – for Breakfast, lunch & dinner – 7 days a week.
Tiri View Lounge at The Bays Club
A great place to have a drink is the Bays Club Sports Bar, while the restaurant – The Tiri View Lounge – provides some of the best views in Auckland.
You can order a meal from their comprehensive a la carte menu or lite meals menu, and sit back and enjoy the
view. They are great meals and won’t break the bank – with most mains priced $20 or less.
Open daily for lunch 12noon to 2pm and Dinner from 6pm every day, except Monday. There is also the Bays Club Café that’s open during normal bar hours.
Aroy Thai Express
Aroy Thai Express at 33 Clyde Road is part of a proven chain of Thai eateries - there are Aroy Thai Express restaurants in both Auckland and Wellington. Since 2007 Aroy has focused on bringing you authentic Thai cuisine, with all its benefits and flavours, without fanfare or a hefty price tag. They believe everyone deserves Thai cuisine
that is authentic, affordable, convenient and most of all… Aroy – which is Thai for tasty!
Open Monday to Friday 11am - 9pm; Saturday/Sunday 12noon - 9pm
Asian Wok in Bute Road specialises in YumCha, Chinese dishes and Asian gourmet cuisine. They are passionate about their food with their YumCha being especially popular.
Popular items on their menu include Steamed BBQ Pork Buns, Sichuan Style Steamed Chicken with Chili Sauce and Sambal King Prawns – yum!
At Asian Wok you can dine in or takeaway and they are open from 10am till late every day.
Deep Creek Brews and Eats
The Deep Creek Brewing Co. has become one of Browns Bay’s real gems. With a great location, on Clyde Road and facing out to the beach on Beachfront Lane, it is a popular spot for dining or just meeting for a drink.
As the name suggests they brew great hand-crafted beers on site (11 varieties) and also have a great selection of food – an extensive menu – thus the name tweak to "Deep Creek Brews and Eats”.
Deep Creek is the brainchild of a couple of country lads who travelled overseas on their ‘OE’ and came back with an idea to brew beer for a living. Browns Bay has become their home and success has seen them add further establishments in Orewa and on Waiheke Island. They also sell their beers through others around the country.
They say their aim is to continually challenge your senses with their recipes, and they hope you enjoy that sensation as you hang out with your great bunch of friends and family! And there ain’t too many more popular spots to hang out than at Deep Creek on Clyde Road.
Rack n Roll Ribs – Hall of Fame
Rack n Roll Ribs in Anzac Road is well know to Bays locals. It originally spawned from the highly successful Serengeti Restaurant in Murrays Bay.
The outlet recently underwent a comprehensive facelift and re-opened under the new brand name “Rack n Roll Ribs, Hall Of Flame” - it was Serengeti Rib Shack.
Rack n Roll Ribs offer more than just Ribs. Pop in and try one of their delicious burgers or order from the range of different chicken dishes or be tempted by one of their sides like calamari. Their Chef runs a weekly special in store with items like 'Chicken Livers Peri Peri'.
Rack n Roll Ribs is open daily from 11.30am and have some great lunch offers and can also cater for parties.
Open Monday to Thursday: 11.30am-8.30pm, Friday and Saturday: 11.30am-9.30pm, Sunday: 11.30am-8.30pm.
Ramen Takara is a Japanese Noodle House, with an outlet in Ponsonby as well as at 4 Anzac Road in Browns Bay – alongside Bolliwood and opposite Speakers Corner.
The restaurant has 37 years of history with its roots in a small Chinese restaurant (Hochinro) at the foot of Mount Fuji. This is where head chef and owner Yuki grew up watching her father's back in a busy restaurant loved by locals.
Ramen Takara opened in 2008, and carries on the traditions of Hochinro while adopting fresh local ingredients, flavours and service.
They take great care in crafting a hearty bowl of ramen starting with our noodles, made on-site everyday only using quality New Zealand flour, fresh local eggs, salt and water. Their delicate broth is prepared every morning over three hours and all of our dishes are cooked from fresh raw ingredients sourced from local suppliers.

Medals Restaurant at East Coast Bays RSA
Medals Restaurant is located within the wonderful East Coast Bays RSA facility in Bute Road Browns Bay.
Serving great food, it’s open for lunch Tuesday through until Saturday from 12noon until 2pm.
The Wednesday Carvery is very popular for dinner from 6pm until 8pm and Medals is also open for dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturdays nights.
They have a great Sunday Buffet that starts from 5.30pm.
Accompanied by a great Bar this is a popular local eatery that must be on your list to try.
Speakers Corner Ale House
Located in the heart of Browns Bay, Anzac Road overlooking the beach, with stunning views of the ocean, Speakers Corner is famous in Browns Bay as a great watering hole, serving up delicious food and an ever-changing line-up of events.
As the name suggest it is just like a British Pub. In fact locals have described it as "having lots of real beer, great people and the food is great for a pub”. You only have to look at the first four mains on the menu to get a feel for the food and value – Bangers And Mash ($16.50); Fish and Chips ($17.50); Steak And Guinness Pie ($17); Chicken And Mushroom Pie ($18).
There’s also Pub Grub, Brunch from 11am and some special nights, such as Quiz Night (Tuesdays); Steak Night (Wednesdays); Fish and Chip Night (Thursdays) and of course lots of entertainment on Fridays and on the Weekends.
Velvet Gypsy Bar and Restaurant
Velvet Gypsy Bar and Restaurant is another of our ‘locals’ that enjoys a prime position in the heart of Browns Bay, on the Waterfront, but also linking right through to Clyde Road – the main drag. So it is extremely popular for those just wanting a quiet drink or meal – inside or out.
They have great food – an extensive menu, plus a great range of beers, ciders, cocktails, wines and spirits, and lots of events happening every week.
On the food side you’ll love 'Mussel Wednesday’ or 'Steak Thursday’ – with special deals that make dining very affordable.
Weekly events include Tuesday Night Poker, a Wednesday Night Quiz and 'Sir Ed Night’ Thursdays when many drinks are just $5.
Velvet Gypsy is also very popular for functions – From 21st’s to cocktail parties to wedding receptions.
Yaruki Japanese Restaurant
This is one of Browns Bay’s most popular restaurants, well patronised as they are known for their great Japanese food. In the heart of Browns Bay on Clyde Road.
Great Sushi and Sashimi, a large range of entrée’s, comprehesive lunch menu with regular specials (from $9.99), plus Donburi, Noodles, Tempura, Salads and more – it is all pretty good. They also have good reviews on restaurant review sites for being busy and having generous, tasty and affordable food.
One recent review had this to say “Best Japanese ever! I love this place, always very friendly and have never had a bad meal. The vege Tempura has to be the best I have ever had."
Open Tuesday through to Saturday for Lunch and Dinner, Sunday Dinner only.
