The Devonport Arts Festival is kicking off early this month with a grand opening day on Saturday November the 8th. The village will be buzzing with buskers, livened with licks of paint, and brought alive with all kinds of art.
On the side of The Vic, local graffiti artist Component will be adding a new touch of beauty to our already stylish theatre, as will Cinzah Seekayem who will be painting the exterior wall of the Firefly Light and Design store. Outside the library construction site, another local painter Doug Dehmer will be encouraging the public to help him with a large community mural, which will serve as a back drop to an outdoor book swap and library, complete with outdoor lights. Between 2-5pm Windsor Reserve will be resplendent with colourful gazebos housing local artists demonstrating their craft, as well as craft sellers offering you the best and most heartfelt Christmas gifts to purchase. For the children there will be free face painting, balloon twisting, a petting zoo, an outdoor yoga class and entertainment.
The festival runs over the nine days between 8-16th, and in that time there are over 35 different art experiences for the public to enjoy; from Tapestry and Chocolate making, to Walking tours, poetry readings, special exhibitions and lectures. There will even be an antique road show of toys, courtesy of local writer David Veart and the Michael King Writers' Centre.
This will be the second revived Devonport Arts Festival, and it's fair to say that it has grown in epic proportions thanks to the 100+ residents who have contributed their time, their skill and their endless enthusiasm in order to offer a range of art experiences to the people of and visitors to Devonport.
Supported by Bayleys, Creative Communities, The Devonport Business Association and The Devonport-Takapuna Local Board, The Devonport Arts Festival is an iconic and historic event that cements the village's identity as Auckland's urban arts village.
