There has been a petrol station at the bottom of the big hill on Beach Road, Browns Bay for as long as most of us can remember. It was always pretty pokey and small as far as petrol stations go, but it ticked the box for an urgent fuel top-up, a last minute bottle of milk or filling your LPG bottle. In recent years it was starting to look pretty tired, so it was fair to say that a lot of people passed it by.
About three years ago, the Caltex service station business was bought by a group of three local lads who run a network of fuel sites, convenience stores and food outlets around the North Island, under the banner of Number 8 Retail Group. Brothers Nic and Ben Paterson, with good friend Jonno Buckley all grew up in the Bays and still live nearby with their young families.
As locals to Caltex Browns Bay themselves, the guys had the vision to see what the Bays market needed from that location, so when the time was right, they purchased the land and buildings from the landlord and set about planning a “field of dreams” kind of petrol station. As that Kevin Costner movie says, “build it and they will come”!
So from February to July this year, Caltex Browns Bay closed down, as the entire site was leveled and completely reworked. The multi-million dollar redevelopment project has delivered a vastly improved community facility, including:
A spacious, high canopy, 8-lane forecourt, with all fuels available at any pump (welcome back the boats and big trucks!). They even added generator back-up, to pump fuel in event of natural disasters.
New Zealand’s most state-of-the-art carwash, where the customer can choose Touchfree or Softwash options, or any combination in between. The finished facility is truly amazing!
A purpose-built, concrete tilt-slab building with LED energy efficient lighting inside and out. A common need for families on the go is a safe and clean bathroom, so they have built some of the most immaculate and modern servo toilets in the country, with touchfree taps, soap dispensers and Dyson blade hand-dryers.
A bright new shop fit out under the name of FIX – a convenience store brand created by the owners, which is now being rolled out across the national Caltex dealer network.
Inside the spacious, new shop you can get fresh barista coffee and a large selection of tasty food including the widely renowned Jesters Pies (even in take-home freezer packs!). The Bay of Islands-sourced fresh fruit and vege stand is also proving a real hit with many customers
A huge LED price sign on the roadside, lets you know the great value fuel pricing that Caltex consistently delivers each day, for its quality fuels containing Techron.
Just like in the good old days, you can still fill up your LPG bottle; get bait and ice, or any other c-store treat or necessity inside the shop.
Something that locals or business owners may not know, is how using the (free to own) AA Smartfuel Card at Caltex means even further everyday fuel savings, with a minimum of six cents per litre discount on any fill of $40 or more. Talk to the friendly staff about how it works, and any terms and conditions. Remember it is free to join the programme and the discount comes off the published price you see on the roadside.
Nic, Ben and Jonno invite you to pop in to Caltex Browns Bay to sample the service and awesome new facilities. They hope it will tick all the boxes as your new favourite local fuel, food, coffee and convenience stop.
