Never being far from the water is one of the aspects to life on the Shore that I love, as do so many people. Swimming is such a prerequisite skill to have here, and, wisely, is a priority for many parents and schools to teach their children. There is now another attractive option for getting into the water in our area with the opening of the impressive Sir Owen G. Glenn National Aquatic Centre in Mairangi Bay. This fabulous new facility rivals anything of its kind anywhere in the world and is going to provide swimming opportunities for the youngest beginner through to Olympic level competitors. And Aidan has put together a great feature for this issue on this new AUT Millennium project, as teased on our beautiful blue cover this month.
Great progress is being made on another world class project, which Channel got behind with a cover feature last June. Our publisher Aidan has been heavily involved in helping generous donors Jackie Kerridge and Chris Reeve make this play dream a reality. I know many people will be delighted to have such a top class facility in Takapuna next summer.
I met X Factor NZ finalists Brendon Thomas & the Vibes ahead of this issue to see what’s been happening for them since their success on the hit TV show. They were ecstatic to have been signed to Sony Music just days after we met - another big Shore music talent to listen out for.
We introduce more new contributors to our ever-growing magazine, including a new youth feature to be written by a member of Takapuna Grammar School’s Journalism Club each month. Not that there’s not enough young blood in our Channel team, of course!
Father’s Day lands early next month so we thought we’d give you an early heads up of some gorgeous gift ideas for you to buy locally in plenty of time for Sunday 7th September.
Enjoy August on the Shore.
