Have you noticed Barfoot & Thompson Residential's office in Takapuna has had an exciting transformation under the guidance of Branch Manager Nicky Rhodes. Nicky – a born and bred Shore girl (went to St Joseph's and Carmel) who loves fitness and sport – took on the role around 18 months ago. Channel Mag's Aidan Bennett put these questions to her in late October, just as her arm had come out of a sling following a broken shoulder after a snow skiing fall.
AIDAN BENNETT: How is the shoulder coming along? I know you love taking part in the Takapuna Beach Series, are you going to be ready to compete this summer?
NICKY RHODES: The medals will be safely going to someone else this season haha! I will be there cheering my husband and boys on though – they'll be participating in the run again this year.
AB: How did you injure it?
NR: Day two of our seven day skiing holiday – just a silly wipeout when my skis hit a rock and the body kept going.
AB: Life must be busy juggling this role, family life with husband Russell and young boys Jack (10) and Sam (7)?
NR: And I wouldn't have it any other way! We've had au pairs for the last five years which was an enormous help but Russell now has a job he loves at the AUT Millenium during school hours which has made life more manageable again.
AB: You quite clearly love the role though, and must be hugely proud of the changes you have made – the office looks fantastic – and the fact that Barfoot & Thompson still have a dominant market share in the area?
NR: I certainly love it and the company and Takapuna office is going from strength to strength. I can't take the credit though – I have a superb team around me – all of whom work exceptionally hard.
AB: What do you do to relax?
NR: Swim, cycle, run, get out fishing on the boat and oops - relaxing? I think I relaxed last in about 1999 :-)
AB: What do you love about Barfoot & Thompson?
NR: I love the fact that we are a family owned company with both the Barfoot and Thompson families still being actively involved. I love that we give so much back to the Auckland community and that we are treated as people not numbers.
AB: Like working in Takapuna?
NR: Love it! Metres from the beach – what more could you want!
AB: Has 2014 been a good year for Barfoot & Thompson Takapuna – your first full year in charge?
NR: 2014 has been a superb year for us. We have gone from languishing around 45th in the company to being around the top 25 for many of the months. We've also had great success in the higher end of the market.
AB: What are you favourite holiday destinations – in New Zealand and overseas?
NR: We love Matapouri in the summer and Mt Ruapehu in the winter. We're taking the boys to Disneyland next year which will be my first time in the States – I'm sure it will be a favourite!
AB: Any big plans for 2015?
NR: To compete in the Barfoot & Thompson ITU Triathlon (shoulder dependent) and to get the office into the top 20 in the company.
AB: Some favourites...
NR: Music: Bruce Springsteen; Reading: Currently reading "The Tea Rose" by Jennifer Donnelly; TV Programme: Wentworth and CSI; Recent Movie: Railway Man; Food: all of it as long as I haven't cooked it!
AB: Complete the following...
NR: If I wasn't in Real Estate I would be... skiing or fishing somewhere in the world.
