Bright and safe for summer: Electrical tips for the festive season

As Kiwis gear up for another classic Kiwi summer - think backyard bbqs, beach days, and Christmas lights twinkling under the pōhutukawa - it’s also the time to make sure your home’s electrical setup is ready for the season.

At Lake Road Electrical, we see plenty of callouts over the summer months, from overloaded power boards to dodgy outdoor plugs. With all the gadgets, decorations and gatherings, it’s easy for your home’s electrical system to be pushed to its limit.

Start with your festive lighting. Check that your Christmas lights are rated for outdoor use if you’re hanging them outside, and make sure cords and plugs aren’t frayed or cracked. Avoid running extension leads through doors or windows where they can get pinched or damaged, and always switch lights off before heading to bed.

If you’re setting up outdoor entertaining areas, now’s the time to make sure your power outlets are weatherproof and your lighting is up to scratch. Installing sensor lights or LED strips around decks and patios not only adds atmosphere but also improves safety when guests are coming and going.

Heading away over the holidays? Switch off non-essential appliances, check your smoke alarms, and consider a timer or smart plug for security lighting to keep things safe while you’re away.

This summer, keep things bright, festive and safe.
