Seeing the many ways people choose to honour those they love is one of the privileges of working in hospital fundraising. Often, these acts of generosity can follow treatment or after a profound loss, transforming gratitude and remembrance into something that will benefit others for years to come.
Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming Julie and her daughters, Kate and Anna, back to Ward 5 at North Shore Hospital. Their visit was an opportunity to reconnect with the team who cared for Peter, Julie’s husband and the girls’ father, during his final days. Peter passed away under the care of the Ward 5 team, and Julie wanted to acknowledge the compassion and support her family received during that difficult time. Rather than flowers, she invited family and friends to make a donation in Peter’s memory, creating a lasting legacy that will help future patients and families.
The donations raised have funded a new La-Z-Boy chair for Ward 5. While it may seem like a simple piece of furniture, its significant impact will be long-lasting. Comfort really matters for family members spending long hours, and sometimes overnight periods, at a loved one’s bedside so they can stay close during some of life’s most challenging moments.
During their visit, Julie, Kate and Anna had the opportunity to meet with charge nurse Coralyn, and Shyleena, one of the nurses who cared for Peter. It was a special moment to thank the people whose kindness and professionalism had meant so much to their family. What I find profound about this story is that Peter’s legacy will continue to touch the lives of others. Long after this donation was made, families facing their own difficult journeys will benefit from the comfort it provides.
In-memory giving is a deeply personal way to honour someone special while supporting the hospital that cared for them. It creates a lasting connection between a loved one’s memory and the wellbeing of future patients and families. On behalf of everyone at North Shore Hospital, thank you to Julie, Kate, Anna, and all those who contributed in Peter’s memory. Your generosity will make a difference to countless families in the years ahead.
