As we move into June, DEPOT offers a space to slow down and reconnect, whether you’re visiting Devonport for the day or looking for something engaging to step into.
At DEPOT Artspace on Clarence St, 'Between Us' continues to 27 June. Presented by the Figurative Artists collective and guest co-curated by Karlalise Hortsmans and Tracey Coakley, the ambitious exhibition brings together 28 contemporary artists working across portraiture and figurative painting. It offers diverse perspectives on identity and lived experience in Aotearoa, and is a rare chance to experience such a wide range of practices in one visit.
DEPOT 3 Vic Road welcomes 'Dim the Lights so I Can See in the Dark', a solo exhibition by local Hauraki-based painter Avi Clark. Opening Friday 5 June from 6pm to 7.30pm, with an artist talk at 6.30pm, the exhibition draws you into a more contemplative way of seeing. An immersive and atmospheric show, it invites you to pause and look longer. All works across both exhibitions are for sale, so if you’re looking for something special, come and have a look. You won’t be disappointed.
Our Maker of the Month is Devonport-based textile artist and Studio D3 resident Karen Rubado. A Master of Fine Arts graduate with First Class Honours from Elam, Karen has exhibited widely, including at Te Tuhi, Webb’s Wellington and the Aotearoa Art Fair. Her practice explores colour shifts, structure, and the interplay of woven forms, resulting in works that are both intricate and quietly powerful. From mini woven pieces on card to fine artworks and hand-loomed scarves, each piece is unique and highly sought after.
While you’re at 3 Vic Road, spend time in the DEPOT Shop | Toi Toa, where you’ll find a curated selection of handmade ceramics, jewellery, textiles, and objects by local artists and makers. You can also visit our Ceramics Studio, an easy drop-in experience where you can paint your own piece to take home, a perfect way to linger a little longer - great for kids and adults alike.
