For North Shore local Jack Dromgool, taking on one of the world’s most iconic marathons is about far more than crossing a finish line. “I never thought I’d have the opportunity,” he says. “My mum ran it in 2008, and I grew up hearing how special it was. To now follow in her footsteps feels pretty incredible.”
But it’s not just the scale of the event that motivates him. It’s something much closer to home. In 2024, Jack’s dad, Tim, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and given just four weeks to live. Thanks to the care of the haematology team at North Shore Hospital, his condition improved dramatically within months. “It was nothing short of incredible,” Jack says. “Eighteen months on, he’s still receiving treatment. That’s why this matters so much to me.”
Now, Jack is taking on this challenge to raise funds for a new Cancer Infusion Service at North Shore Hospital, helping ensure others in the community have access to the same level of care and support. “For me, it’s about turning something deeply personal into something positive for others,” he explains. “What patients go through is far tougher than anything like running a marathon.”
Fundraising has already shown him the power of community. When he ran the Hawke’s Bay Marathon, he raised over $7,000 for Blood Cancer NZ with the support of friends, family and colleagues. “I learned that when you ask for help, people show up. Most people genuinely want to support a good cause.” Being part of a global event while supporting his local community is something he doesn’t take lightly. “I’m a North Shore local through and through, so being able to do something on a world stage while giving back at home means a lot.”
Well Foundation is proud to support a small group of individuals like Jack as they take on one of the world’s most iconic marathons in 2027. We are now looking to connect with others in our community who are ready to step up, take on something meaningful, and make a real impact. Interest in this challenge is building. If Jack’s story has sparked something for you, now is the time to get in touch.
