One of the most inspiring parts of my role is seeing how a single act of generosity can create a ripple effect far beyond what most people imagine. Recently, one of our valued donors chose to give back to the cardiology department at North Shore Hospital after experiencing exceptional care herself over many years. Having personally benefited from the expertise and compassion of the cardiology team, she wanted to support improvements that would help other patients navigate their own heart health journey. Her generosity is already making a meaningful difference in several ways.

Firstly, her donation funded a new accessible height and weight scale for the cardiology procedures space. While it may sound simple, this specialised equipment is incredibly important for older and more fragile patients, helping make assessments safer, more comfortable and more dignified. Staff have noted just how valuable this will be in day-to-day patient care.

Her support has also helped bring to life an innovative fluid tracker app, designed to support cardiac patients in managing their condition from home. The app allows patients to monitor fluid intake and weight over time, helping clinicians identify concerns earlier and potentially reducing avoidable hospital admissions. Most importantly, it gives patients greater confidence and independence in managing their health beyond the hospital walls.

Importantly, this gift is also an investment in people. Funding has been allocated to a nurse training fund, enabling cardiology nurses to continue accessing advanced clinical education and training. Supporting dedicated nurses in this way strengthens care not only today, but for every patient needing care in the future.

What moves me most is that this single act of generosity will touch the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of patients over time. From older patients needing safer assessments, to people managing complex heart conditions from home, to nurses continuing to build advanced clinical expertise, this donation is strengthening care at every level. Its impact will be felt not just by the patients receiving treatment today, but by countless families who will rely on our cardiology service in the years ahead.
