Bird flu (H5N1) – what you need to know
MPI has confirmed H5N1 bird flu in New Zealand for the first time, with a second case now confirmed in a kāhu (harrier hawk) in the Wairarapa. It's expected to keep spreading via wild and migratory birds, and once established, it can't be eradicated from wild populations. Waterfowl, shorebirds, and seabirds – many of the species we see regularly around the North Shore – are among the most vulnerable. If you see three or more sick or dead wild birds together, please don't touch or move them. Call the exotic pest and disease hotline, 0800 80 99 66, with location, photos, species, and numbers if you can. Early reporting is one of the few tools we have to slow the spread.
