Stability and forward-thinking innovation at Kristin

Over the last 20 years, I have had the privilege of leading International Baccalaureate (IB) schools globally and contributing to the continuous improvement of school communities as an International Baccalaureate workshop leader, evaluator, consultant and IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) lead educator. Therefore, it is a great pleasure to be serving in the first authorised IB School in New Zealand. What resonated with me when I joined Kristin as the Executive Principal was how our educational programmes offer both stability and forward-thinking innovation, a distinctive advantage at a time of significant national curriculum change.

A defining strength of Kristin’s approach is that our curriculum design has clear learning outcomes that ensure coherence, academic rigour and purposeful progression across year levels, ensuring our Year 13 graduates are future ready. Rather than reacting to change, Kristin’s programmes are intentionally structured, enabling students to develop critical thinking, intercultural understanding and transferable skills that extend beyond national requirements. With the aim of developing inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better, more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect, our wholehearted education goes beyond academics and is integral to the learning journey of all Kristin students. This includes the intentionally planned experiential learning, service and leadership opportunities.

Kristin has developed deep institutional expertise in inquiry-based learning and conceptual understanding. Kristin has explicitly developed knowledge, skills, competencies and positive attitudes to learning and used internationally benchmarked assessment practices to inform excellence in teaching and learning. This aligns strongly with emerging curriculum directions in New Zealand while also maintaining global relevance.

Kristin educators are not only experienced classroom practitioners but also international examiners, moderators and evaluators, bringing insider knowledge of international standards and assessment expectations. This expertise enhances teaching quality and provides students with a clear understanding of how to succeed. In addition, Kristin is formally evaluated by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) every five years and invests in our teachers' ongoing professional development to enhance the impact of our teaching on students' learning outcomes. Since 1989, Kristin has offered its senior students the choice of the IB Diploma programme or the New Zealand national qualification (now NCEA). The school’s dual pathway model enhances our students' opportunities, empowering them to select a pathway aligned with their strengths, aspirations and future goals, whether local or global.

Kristin shares a commitment to quality international education as part of a network of over 5000 schools in over 140 countries and plays an active and supportive role in the worldwide community of IB schools. Therefore, as New Zealand schools navigate evolving expectations, Kristin’s long-standing commitment to the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework positions us uniquely. In an era of uncertainty and change, I am proud that we stand out for our clarity of vision, depth of expertise and commitment to preparing students for an interconnected world.
