One of the most common comments we hear from clients after moving into a retirement village is: “I wish I had done it sooner.” For many people, leaving the family home can feel like a daunting decision. Homes often hold decades of memories, making the prospect of moving difficult. Yet once settled into village life, many residents discover a level of freedom, security and connection they had not expected.
In New Zealand, retirement village residents generally enter into an Occupation Right Agreement (ORA). Rather than purchasing the villa or apartment itself, an ORA gives the resident the right to occupy their chosen home within the village for the rest of their life, subject to the agreement's terms. Funding an ORA often involves selling the family home to release capital.
While this can feel like a significant step, many people find the benefits far outweigh the challenges. One of the greatest advantages is leaving behind the ongoing responsibilities of home maintenance. Tasks such as mowing lawns, cleaning gutters and organising repairs become someone else's responsibility, allowing residents to focus on the activities and people they enjoy most.
Retirement villages can also provide a vibrant and supportive lifestyle. Many offer facilities such as cafés, libraries, swimming pools, fitness centres, hobby rooms and organised social events. Residents often have opportunities to join clubs, attend outings, participate in exercise classes or simply enjoy time with neighbours. For those living alone or with family further away, the sense of community can be especially valuable.
A move into a retirement village is also an ideal time to review important legal arrangements. Every resident should have an up-to-date will and Enduring Powers of Attorney for both property, and personal care and welfare. These documents ensure trusted people can make decisions on your behalf if needed and provide reassurance for you and your family.
Retirement living is not simply about planning for the future; for many, it is about making the most of the present. A move to a retirement village can bring greater freedom, new friendships and fewer day-to-day responsibilities, helping residents enjoy this stage of life with confidence and peace of mind.
