What happens during a full body mole check?

Question: I’m 38 years old and I’ve never had a mole check. I’d like to get one, particularly as I have a mole on my leg that I think may have changed over the past few months, but I’m unsure about the procedure. Can you tell me what happens during a mole check consultation?

Dr Coe: MoleMan’s skin cancer doctors provide comprehensive full-body mole checks, in around 30 minutes. We advise wearing loose, comfortable clothing, so you don’t need to get fully undressed. During your consultation, the doctor will use a hand-held dermoscope and a molemap camera, to check your skin from head to toe, and photograph any concerning moles or lesions. Any images taken will be magnified on a large HDTV screen. This allows our doctors to identify very early signs of skin cancer and melanoma, on the spot, and provide you with feedback or recommended next steps. They can also answer any queries you may have about your skin during the check. We have a video called 'What to expect at a mole check' in the ‘Services’ section of our website - www.moleman.co.nz/services – with further details on what to wear, the technology we use and what happens during your consultation.
