Younite at Lakehouse Arts

By Adriana Tobin, co-chair of Younite

From Sunday 30 July to Thursday 10 August, Younite hosted its most highly anticipated event of the year: our Rangatahi Art Exhibition at Lake House Arts! We were honoured to show 15 artists who displayed over 40 incredible pieces of artwork.

We kicked off the art exhibition with two phenomenal musical performances by Michelle Hendra and Ethan Xie accompanied by Younite’s very own Martin Wang. Thank you to The Platter Collective for providing us with a tasty feed and a massive thank you to everyone who came and supported our talented rangatahi artists!
Younite would like to acknowledge everyone who contributed to the success of this event. Special thank you to the wonderful Yeon Seo Kim who is the arts and culture committee leader of Younite, and who expertly spearheaded and led the exhibition. Thanks are also due to Lake House Arts and its amazing arts coordinator Hannah Berry for her constant support and guidance.
Younite would also like to acknowledge and thank all the talented artists who displayed their incredibly beautiful artwork. We ran a People's Choice Award event where attendees at the exhibition could vote for their favourite piece(s) and artist.
Younite is proud to announce first place in the People’s Choice Award for the 2023 Rangatahi Art Exhibition is: Sylvie Waddingham! Sylvie displayed four vibrant and colourful pieces: “Tropical Rainforest”, “Vase of Spring”, “Jug of Blossoms”, and “Covered in Colour”. Her signature style shone through, and we are excited to see where Sylvie’s art journey takes her. Younite is also honoured to announce the runner-up for the People’s Choice Award 2023. Massive congratulations to Lucy Carr and her piece “The Blue Swan Hotel, Route 66”!

“Hi, I’m Sylvie and I only found out that I had a real passion for art about a year and a half ago. All of those 14 years of my life, I drew different things now and again, but I never found what I loved to draw. One holiday, I was at my grandparents' bach, and I sketched a colourful Italian village. That was the first time that I realised how much I love art. I like drawing because it is relaxing and every time I make a design, it is always better than the last one.”
“My name is Lucy Carr, I am 18 years old and I have always had a passion for art and have explored a wide range of media but have always had a soft spot for traditional painting. I work mainly in acrylics but have recently turned my hand to oils. This particular piece was painted as a gift for my dad. He travelled to America to purchase his dream car and drove across country. He stopped at the Route 66 Blue Swallow Motel and that photo became the image I recreated.”
