Signal Hill’s name is a nod to the building’s historic roots. The home was originally built around 1846 by William Oliver, one of the earliest settlers on the North Shore and the first person laid to rest at Signal Hill – the landmark we know now as Mt Victoria/Takarunga.
Then named Flagstaff, the township was to transform from an isolated ‘island’ into a heaving commercial centre and busy naval base. At the heart of it all, standing through decades of change, war campaigns and commercial development, was 24 Victoria Road – now Devonport's iconic Signal Hill Bar and Eatery. As the oldest existing house in Devonport, 24 Victoria Road boasts more than a century's worth of intrigue. If the walls could talk, they’d tell tales of pioneers, politics and even scandal!
In preserving a piece of history, the team at Signal Hill has created a new future for one of Devonport’s most loved landmarks, bringing this building back to life to serve as a modern bar and restaurant in the heart of the Devonport township. Today, Signal Hill is a space where locals and visitors can connect, enjoy great food and share their own tales over a glass with family and friends.
The result is a family-friendly bar and restaurant that suits the laid-back, outdoor-living lifestyle of the Devonport community and beyond while also serving as a drawcard for city dwellers across the harbour. You can sit down for a meal inside the formal dining room or on the deck in the sunshine, or choose something lighter from the snack menu to quell your appetite. There is a private room called William Oliver, which can be hired for free and seats eight comfortably. Great for community groups, private meetings or just a family get-together for any occasion.
