In our December issue two years ago, we featured the impressive brand spanking new motor vehicle facility on Auckland’s North Shore, that had just opened on Fred Thomas Drive, close to Takapuna and the motorway. The dealership was the new home of brands; Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot and GWM. The location, being close to the motorway with easy access to the bridge and Auckland city – as well as Takapuna, Milford, and the Devonport Peninsula – is about perfect for a dealership selling high-quality motor vehicles. The 9,924 square metre site has abundant parking. The Dealership was the first of its kind in New Zealand, built to a new worldwide style of Mercedes-Benz architecture – known as MAR2020. It was the first in New Zealand. A feature is an 18-hoist service department that enables up to 60 vehicles to be serviced daily. There are also 18 EV chargers. Two years on we decided it was time to catch up with Craig Innes, MD of the motor vehicle group and Milford resident. The man who drove the investment. We talked about the new facility and exciting things happening with the brands they represent on the site. Aidan Bennett caught up with Craig in late November.
CHANNEL MAG: Craig, two years on you must be thrilled with the new facility that is home to Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot and GWM?
CRAIG INNES: Thank you, Aidan! The new site has been a game-changer for our customers, and we’ve received an abundance of positive feedback about it. It’s been wonderful to see how much people appreciate the new facility.
What are the key things that you love about the site?
The contemporary design, both inside and out, creates an inspiring and dynamic atmosphere for our guests and team members. This innovative layout also enables us to offer unique showroom experiences for each of our four brands, all within a single state-of-the-art facility.
It’s a great venue for events as well. It’s no secret that you are strong supporters of the community and worthy charities, what events have you hosted during 2024?
In 2023 and 2024, we proudly hosted Champagne on the Shore, a charity event in support of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). Both evenings were truly spectacular, bringing people together for an incredible cause. We’re excited to announce that the third annual Champagne on the Shore will take place on Friday 9 May 2025, and we’d love to see as many Channel Magazine readers there as possible. Join us for another unforgettable night in support of this amazing charity!
Mercedes-Benz continues to innovate and offer some of the world’s leading vehicles, what excites you about the current range and what should we look for in 2025 for the German motor vehicle giant?
Our current vehicle range showcases impressive innovations in technology, reflecting the cutting-edge approach Mercedes-Benz has always been known for. Looking ahead, the brand is set to place an even greater emphasis on luxury, ensuring an elevated experience for all our customers.
GWM has emerged as a very popular vehicle with Kiwis in recent years, what do you believe is driving the success of that brand and exciting your customers?
GWM has been an outstanding addition to our business, bringing an impressive line-up of vehicles across their brands: Tank, Haval, Ora, and Cannon Ute. With diverse powertrain options and a 7-Year Warranty, all at competitive prices, there’s something for everyone. My personal favourite, the Tank 300, has developed a cult following in New Zealand, with many owners customising them in unique and exciting ways. If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, I highly recommend taking one from the GWM North Shore range for a test drive – you won’t be disappointed!
Peugeot continues to make fine motor vehicles. I was reading somewhere that the French business started in 1810 so there is a strong heritage. What excites you about the Peugeot offering in 2024/25?
Yes, Peugeot is truly a brand with a rich history. Growing up, I have fond memories of helping my mother spec her new Peugeots with various options – a clear early sign of the career path I was destined to follow! This month, we launched the new 3008, which has always been the stand out model in our range. The latest version is incredibly futuristic in design and looks fantastic, offering an exciting glimpse into the future direction of Peugeot.
I understand you are a keen motor racing driver. What events have you competed in during 2024 and what do you have planned in summer 2025?
Yes, I’m passionate about motor racing, but I’ve scaled back my activities in recent years due to having a young family. In 2024, I’ve been competing in circuit endurance racing events, which has been great fun. Looking ahead to next year, I plan to continue with similar endurance events. However, my focus is on supporting my eight-year-old son, William, who has recently taken up kart racing. Watching his enthusiasm and growth in the sport has been incredibly rewarding!
After a busy and challenging year what does Craig and his family have planned for the summer break?
We’re looking forward to spending the summer break at our home in Taupō. I lived there for about five years, and it’s always a pleasure to return – it holds a special place in my heart. The kids absolutely love it too, with so many activities to keep them entertained. Fingers crossed for some great weather to make the most of our time there! I wish all our customers and Channel Mag readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. 2025 is going to be good!
