Birkenhead College welcomes our new principal

Birkenhead College is delighted to welcome Mr David Burton as our new principal.

For Mr Burton, this is more than a new role; it's a return to a school and community he knows and values. Having previously spent almost six years at Birkenhead College as assistant principal and deputy principal, he is excited to be back leading the school into its next chapter.

Most recently, Mr Burton has been associate principal at Westlake Girls High School, where he helped lead significant improvements in student achievement and learning. His commitment to high expectations, innovation, and ensuring every young person has the opportunity to succeed contributed to the school receiving national recognition for excellence in educational leadership.

What makes this appointment especially meaningful is Mr Burton's strong connection to our local community. He lives on the North Shore with his family, his children attend Kauri Park School, and he serves on its board. You'll also find him supporting his children on the sports field at Birkenhead United and Northcote Rugby. He understands what local families value because he is one of them.

Mr Burton is passionate about creating a school where every student feels known, supported, challenged, and inspired to achieve their personal best. He believes Birkenhead College has enormous potential and is committed to working alongside students, staff, whānau, and the wider community to build on the school's proud traditions while embracing exciting opportunities for the future.

"My time at Birkenhead College was among the most rewarding of my career, and returning as principal is a tremendous honour. As a local parent and resident, I'm passionate about ensuring every family can have complete confidence that their local college provides outstanding opportunities for every young person to thrive."
