Euro summer vibes, Shore-side

It’s October and spring has finally sprung in Tāmaki Makaurau! Over the dreary winter, I have felt that everyone but me has been jetting off around the world and having an idyllic European summer. But now, the skies are clearing, and the temperatures are beginning to rise, so here are my recommendations for your own ‘Euro summer’ right here on the Shore.

Lucas Creek
With the weather getting warmer, October is the perfect time to start working on your summer tan, and Lucas Creek is a hidden gem right here on the Shore for a cute picnic or a dip in the water. Walking distance from Albany Senior High School or Massey University, surprisingly few people know about this picturesque spot, so you’ll get that ‘Euro summer’ tan without the crowds.

Mairangi Arts Centre
If what appeals to you about travel is the vibrant arts scene abroad, fear not, because we have our very own right here too. Mairangi Arts Centre is one of many community galleries and creative spaces in Tāmaki, offering exhibitions, classes and workshops for all ages. Enjoy great art by local creatives, or learn anything from drawing and painting to pottery and beading. It’s the perfect way to fill a sunny spring afternoon and pick up a new hobby to help kick the TikTok addiction.

Patch Café
Located in Sunnybrae, Patch has been a long-time favourite of mine. It’s fabulous all year round, but especially lovely when the weather's getting warmer. With gorgeous interiors and an equally amazing menu, Patch is a must-have on your list for brunch or a quick study break coffee. Because of its prime location, Patch is also super easy to get to, with multiple bus stops within walking distance.

Yomi Bowls
Spring also means that exam season is just around the corner, and amidst all that hecticness, you deserve a sweet treat! Newly opened on Hurstmere Road in Takapuna, Yomi Bowls is the perfect place for frozen yoghurt. If, like me, your TikTok feed is bombarded by people at Yo-Chi in Australia or London, we can now enjoy the same little treat right here on the Shore. Be as restrained (or not) as you want, with the pay-by-weight system making it very student budget-friendly!

Second Avenue
For me, the best part of a holiday is always the shopping, but on a budget and not so far from home, Second Avenue op shop in Takapuna is the perfect spot to pick up some cute spring time outfits and accessories. Stocked with both big brands and rare finds, it’s a great place to refresh your wardrobe to feel like you’re fresh off the plane without having to break the bank.

Milford Motel
If you’re after dinner with the girls or a spot for after-work drinks, Milford Motel is vibrant and fun, with decor that transports you straight to Italy. Although it is a little on the pricier side, Milford Motel is on the First Table app, offering 50% off food if you book through it, so you can enjoy an amazing evening that won’t hurt your pockets. Sit in the sun with an Aperol Spritz, share some appetisers, and bask in the fact that anything Europe can do, we can do it just as well (maybe even better).
