Susan Nicholls owns SkinSense in Devonport; her passion is finding and understanding the best new therapies for her clients. While she personally isn’t a huge social media person, she employs a marketer to manage her social media for her as she recognises the importance of it for her business. Susan purchased SkinSense Beauty Therapy in 1991 with her husband and employed her first staff member after working solo for the first six months. In the early 2000s, Susan doubled the size of the salon by gaining the space next door where she added four extra treatment rooms employing more staff and growing the business into what it is today.
Channel Mag: Tell readers a little bit about SkinSense and how it came about…
Susan Nicholls: The original story stems back to when I was about 14 years of age and decided that I wanted to become a beauty therapist. Once qualified, I worked in the industry for a couple of years and was an active committee member of the New Zealand Beauty Therapy Association. I dreamed of owning my own business so when the opportunity arose to purchase SkinSense in 1991 I decided to challenge myself to see if I could do it! More than 33 years later, I still love our industry and all the clients I look after.
Is Instagram a source of inspiration for you?
Social media hasn’t really been a huge source of inspiration for me personally although I understand the importance of it so have a wonderful marketing person who looks after this for me. I do belong to several beauty therapy social media groups here in New Zealand and overseas where we share relevant information. My inspiration comes from attending post graduate courses, keeping up with the latest technology for treatments and reading scientific information from reliable sources that explain what and how an ingredient works within a product. This is what inspires me to gain the best results possible for our clients.
What’s happening at SkinSense that you want locals to know about?
Although we cater to all aspects of beauty therapy, we have a strong passion for non-surgical anti-ageing facials and facial treatments. Our current promotion is our Advanced Anti-Ageing package which includes the Rezenerate facial to repair and regenerate, micro-current sculpting to lift and tone, and LED to stimulate collagen. It’s a powerful combination of treatments rolled into one facial for outstanding anti-ageing results. We might have to keep this one permanently on our menu!
