New perspectives, new strengths: The life-changing impact of student exchange

The world is changing. Is your teen ready?

Many of the skills needed to navigate our increasingly globalised world aren’t found in textbooks. They are found in the bakeries of France, the morning rush of Osaka, and the dinner tables of Buenos Aires. They are learned when we step just a little bit outside our comfort zone. AFS Intercultural Programmes New Zealand has helped over 20,000 Kiwi students swap the familiar for a global edge that lasts a lifetime.

Beyond tourism: Real immersion
An AFS student exchange programme is so much more than a holiday. Whether it’s a four-week deep-dive or an 11-month immersion, our students don’t just visit - they belong. They join families, navigate high school and live life like a local. They return with a level of independence, resilience and a global outlook (not to mention language skills!) that makes them stand out from their peers back home.

The power of being uncomfortable
Going on exchange isn’t always easy. Some days it’s tough. But it’s those challenging moments that bring about what we call the ‘AFS Effect’: true growth and transformation that can’t be taught in a classroom.

As Tessa, a local North Shore student, puts it, “I gained so many valuable life skills, built resilience, and my confidence improved immensely. I learnt not only how to overcome challenges, but also to be comfortable with being uncomfortable in the unknown.”

Investment in the future: Scholarships
We believe that intercultural exchange should be accessible to as many young New Zealanders as possible. Financial barriers shouldn’t stand in the way of global growth, which is why we are proud to offer a range of scholarships and grants to provide assistance where needed. From 2023 to 2025 alone, AFS has awarded over $430,000 in scholarships to New Zealand students, and our commitment continues into 2026 and beyond.

Legacy of trust
Since 1947, AFS has been a non-profit, volunteer-driven organisation dedicated to creating Active Global Citizens. With 24/7 support, world-leading educational content and trusted partners like the UN and the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania, we provide the safety net that allows your teen to spread their wings. From four weeks to 11 months, with programmes in over 50 destinations, the world is ready for them!

Take the first step
There is a lot to think about when planning an exchange. Where to, when and for how long are usually the first questions that come up. We invite you to join us for an afternoon of inspiration and information, where you can ask all the questions and get all the details you need.
