This winter, Shoreside Theatre invites North Shore audiences into a world of intrigue, tension and unravelling truths with 'The Stranger', a gripping psychological thriller from the pen of Agatha Christie. Long hidden in the Christie archives, this rare work is finally stepping into the spotlight, making its New Zealand premiere at the iconic PumpHouse Theatre in Takapuna.
At the centre of the story is Enid, played by Heather Warne, a woman whose life appears perfectly in place: a city flat, a dependable fiancé, and a future that feels safe and predictable. But when a charming and enigmatic stranger appears unexpectedly, one impulsive decision sets off a chain of events she cannot undo. What follows is a tightly woven tale of secrets, suspicion and shifting loyalties, building to a finale that will keep audiences guessing until the very last moment.
Presented by Shoreside Theatre, 'The Stranger' promises a thrilling theatrical experience. Known for their annual sell-out Agatha Christie productions, Shoreside combines sumptuous costumes, inventive staging and a passionate cast of local talent to create work that resonates long after the curtain falls. Behind the scenes, a dedicated crew works hand-in-hand with the cast, bringing every detail together to create something truly special on stage.
The play, directed by Jenny Whisken, marks her directorial debut at the helm of Shoreside's Christie productions. Jenny has been immersed in the performing arts since the age of four, training in ballet, modern dance and drama before spending many years acting, singing and dancing. She first directed in 1989, earning an award for Best Director, and has since developed a deep passion for the collaborative process of bringing a script to life. She was drawn to 'The Stranger' for its unique narrative and unexpected twists. “It’s not what we usually expect from Miss Christie,” she says with a smile.
If you’re a fan of gripping storytelling and high-quality local theatre, this is one to book early; 'The Stranger' delivers suspense in true Christie style – layered, clever and deliciously unsettling. Experience a ‘new’ Agatha Christie play that feels both timeless and thrillingly fresh, at the beautiful PumpHouse Theatre on the shores of Lake Pupuke in Takapuna.
