Turning exam stress into confidence: One young person's journey

"I realised I couldn't change everything that was happening around me," Sam* says now, looking back. "But I could change how I responded to it." Those words come from a 13-year-old who, only months earlier, could barely bring himself to walk through the school gates.

Sam had been dealing with ongoing bullying, the kind that doesn't always show up as a single dramatic incident, but wears away at a young person's confidence day by day. It affected his focus in class, his sense of self, and, as exams drew closer, his ability to cope at all. By the time he came to Northspan Wellbeing, his anxiety had reached a point where even getting through the school day felt like a battle. What struck his counsellor most, though, wasn't the difficulty Sam was facing; it was his determination to do something about it.

A safe space to be heard

Working alongside a Northspan counsellor, Sam began a series of individual counselling sessions built around a strengths-based, trauma-informed approach. Rather than focusing only on the problem, the sessions helped him build resilience, recognise the early signs of stress, and develop practical, real-world strategies for the moments that felt hardest to manage.
Session by session, Sam and his counsellor explored his personal strengths, his goals, and better ways to navigate the pressures piling up around him: schoolwork, social dynamics, and the quiet weight of just trying to get through each day. It's slow, deliberate work. And it's exactly the kind of work that, over time, adds up to real change.

Building confidence, one step at a time

As the weeks went on, Sam started to notice the shift himself. He began to understand how his thoughts, feelings, and behaviours were connected, and, more importantly, what he could actually do about it. He learned to spot the early signs of stress before they took hold, and to respond to difficult moments in healthier, steadier ways.
By the time exams arrived, something had changed. Sam felt equipped, not because the pressure had disappeared, but because he now had the tools to meet it. He'd also started identifying the goals and values that would help guide his choices going forward.
His counsellor, Gemma Neuendorf, has seen this shift many times before, and it never gets any less meaningful. "One of the most rewarding parts of working with young people is watching them recognise their own strengths," she says. "Sam gained real confidence in his ability to manage challenges, and started to see a future for himself that wasn't defined by the difficulties he'd been through."
Not every challenge disappears overnight. But these early gains gave Sam something durable to build on: a foundation for continued growth, wellbeing and success.

Why early support matters
Here's something we wish more families knew: young people don't need to be in crisis to benefit from counselling.
Often, the most powerful support is the kind that arrives early, before stress, anxiety, or emotional difficulties have the chance to snowball. Timely help doesn't just ease the moment. It hands young people tools they'll carry with them for life.
At Northspan Wellbeing, we see this play out again and again. Early intervention helps young people build resilience, grow their self-confidence, strengthen their coping skills, and lift their overall wellbeing. And sometimes, the biggest outcome of all is simply helping a young person realise they're not facing life's challenges alone.

Supporting our school communities
It's this belief that led us to launch a koha-based pre-exam wellbeing programme for secondary schools across Auckland.
Held as interactive evening sessions, the programme runs parallel presentations for students and parents. Students learn practical strategies for managing stress, anxiety and feeling overwhelmed during exam season. At the same time, parents gain insight into adolescent wellbeing and emotional development, along with simple, everyday ways to support their young person through demanding periods.
The response has been heartening. Schools across Auckland have already shown strong interest, a clear sign of just how much appetite there is for professional wellbeing support within our school communities.
