On September 18, Takapuna Grammar School officially opened its refurbished pool, which has been deepened to accommodate water polo, as well as gaining new filtration, heating, floodlighting, and upgraded changing rooms.
Sir Stephen Tindall, a TGS alumnus and a record-holding swimmer and champion water polo player while at the school, generously donated to help fund the upgrade and has been honoured by the new pool name. Principal Mary Nixon thanked Sir Stephen as well as the wider team who managed, supported, and fundraised for the project. Head Prefects Claudia Pearce and Hugo Chapman helped cut the ribbon.
The pool was shown to great effect when Olympic swimmers Erika Fairweather and Lewis Clareburt gave a swimming demonstration. Kane Morrison, premier boys water polo coach, commented that TGS water polo would reach a new level now that they can train in their own pool multiple times a week.
