A Birkenhead boy is celebrating being named the Cadet Rok National Schools Champion after a recent weekend of racing at KartSport Auckland.
Dominic Evers was representing Verran Primary School and, as the youngest in his class, proved that age is no barrier with some impressive and consistent racing in a field of experienced racers including the national and GoldStar champions.
Channel asked young Dominic some questions on the back of his July win.
What do you love about karting?
Being able to do what I love and being a part of a team. I currently race a DR Kart with Dane Harte Racing Team. My family are always at the track with me and I couldn’t do it without them.
How long have you raced and how did you get into it?
I have been racing for just over a year, but I have wanted to race since I was even younger. Both my grandparents raced when they were younger and my Great Grandy built kart chassis too. In lockdown, Mum and Dad got me a kart just to go up and down the driveway so that I could learn to accelerate, brake and turn. Then I had to wait until I was six before I could get my license for KartSport NZ.
What are your highlights and recent experiences of competing?
When I started karting last year, we just stuck to mainly the Auckland track to get used to racing. We did venture out to a couple of tracks once I started to get my licenses. Once I had my Tier 2 license, we headed to Hawkes Bay for the Blossom Festival where I came fifth. I then attended the KartSport NZ Racing Academy and achieved my Tier 1 license (top license in NZ Karting). So far this year I have achieved a sixth at CIK Hamilton, fifth at the NZ Nationals in Manawatu, and fourth in the NZ KartStars Series, which was held at five different tracks over NZ.
My recent experience of racing was at the National Schools Champs, which has been the highlight of my year so far. I managed to get two heat wins and won overall, which means I can race with the NS as my number until the next championship in Nelson 2024.
Where to from here?
My parents are now looking to plan ahead to the 2024 Nationals, which are being held in Marlborough at Easter. I am hoping we will be able to get there. They said we will also look to try and get to defend the National Schools title, which is being held in Nelson in July 2024.
I am really thankful for the people who support me and help mentor me in this journey, especially my parents and brother. I am always happy to discuss karting with anyone or help other kids get into the sport. We also have sponsorship opportunities available if any local businesses are interested.
