COVID-19 and ways to keep you and your family safe

There’s a Chinese proverb that goes something like ‘there is nothing certain, but the uncertain’. If the last few weeks are any indication, the next few months and possibly years will cause much uncertainty for people in our community and country.

As we attempt to contain the outbreak of the coronavirus (Covid-19) nationally to protect our population and economy, I want you to know that my team and I are here for you, with my office ready to help during this time.

Recently the Prime Minister announced four weeks of instruction to stay at home, with all non-essential businesses and educational facilities closing. This was a good decision as we must do everything possible to contain the outbreak of Covid-19 in our community.

During this time of self-isolation, please take care of our most vulnerable citizens. Elderly and those with prior medical conditions such as diabetes are most at-risk of contracting Covid-19. Simple things you can do for them include doing a shopping run or just giving them a phone call on a regular basis.

The Ministry of Health continues to provide up to date advice and I recommend you follow their guidance. Go to https://covid19.govt.nz/ or phone 0800 358 5453 to stay up to date.

If your business has been negatively impacted by Covid-19, you may be eligible for a government wage subsidy. Go to https://www.workandincome.govt.nz/ for more information.

If you are a worker, you should be making arrangements with your employer to work from home if it is possible. Go to https://covid19.govt.nz/help-and-advice/for-businesses-and-organisations/employers-including-rse/ for more information.

Take all necessary precautions and remain calm. We will get through this, I’m sure of that. We will get through it by looking out for ourselves and for others. In times like these, our tight-knit community will show our true colours and only strengthen.
Please feel free to get in touch if there’s anything my team and I can do for you.

Kia kaha,
