Devonport comes to life and dazzles for Glow at Artweek

Blustery winds didn’t dampen the enthusiastic crowds at Windsor Reserve in Devonport on Friday and Saturday, 18th and 19th October. Hundreds turned out to marvel at the wonderful sculptures as part of Glow at Artweek.  This event is in its fifth year and is usually voted best of all the Artweek exhibitions – an annual week-long festival where Auckland celebrates the visual arts.

Unitec’s second-year architecture students have designed and built vibrant and clever light pavilions. Their brief was zero waste and zero budget, and they produced nine different installations made from sustainably-resourced materials including paper, bamboo, recycled plastic, cardboard tubing and string. Part of their 'end of year' assessment, the students are judged on creative thinking, design, curation, installation, collaborative working and sustainability.

Many families attended and the children delighted in the changing lights, mysterious tunnels, mazes to walk through and string shapes they could step into. The lights are powered by Vector, proudly showcasing their latest renewable technology. Other sponsors are Unitec, the Devonport-Takapuna local board and the Devonport Business Association.
