On 25 May a good crowd gathered at Killarney Park as Auckland Council unveiled ‘Soapbox’ – a new and interactive public artwork overlooking Lake Pupuke. The glass reinforced concrete plinth, coloured in a red that offers a nod to both the neighbouring PumpHouse and to the volcanic origins of the lake, was designed and built by artists Olivia Collinson, Prue Fea and Vanessa Coxhead in collaboration with architecture and design firm Jasmax. Once unveiled, ‘Soapbox’ immediately hosted performances by poets and writers including Rose Northey, Courtney Sina Meredith and Grace Taylor.
